Bushra Abassi | Bezalel Gallery of Contemporary Art
In a series of sculptural objects, Bushra Abassi takes inspiration from Orientalist paintings and removes the human subjects from the scene. Instead, she focuses on isolated architectural details and creates three-dimensional representations of them. Through this process, Abassi attempts to redirect the viewer's attention away from the Orientalist lens and towards the local architecture. By removing the human subjects and focusing on the architectural detail, Abassi reverses the power dynamics and asymmetry present in the original paintings. She also creates a contemporary archaeology of painting by reimagining the past and offering an alternative visual record of local audience.
