Ecmnesia

Mai Daas, Dor Guez, Tigist Yoseph Ron, Samah Shihadi | Cosmo, Rome

The exhibition Ecmnesia explores the past through personal and collective memory, with the artists using their artwork to grapple with their identities within the context of their social realities. Samah Shihadi's pencil drawings offer a hyper-realistic representation of memories from her childhood village, while Mai Daas's paintings deal with the tension between societal expectations of women and the strength of femininity. Tigist Yoseph Ron's "At Home" series combines old and new family photos to create a new plane of existence, and Dor Guez's video "Sabir" uses archival footage and photographs to examine the construction of memory and narrative over time. The exhibition as a whole deals with themes of rootedness, belonging, and the self in relation to the other. Works by Daas, Guez, Yoseph Ron and Shihadi offer alternatives to the competitive arena of recollection and contested truth, a history of the present moment.
